The 2024 Pavement Recycling Summit is Headed to the Biggest Little City

Tuesday, August 20, 2024

The Asphalt Recycling & Reclaiming Association (ARRA) has partnered with the Rocky Mountain Asphalt User Producer Group (RMAUPG) to host the 2024 ARRA Pavement Recycling Summit with RMAUPG in Reno, NV October 21-24. Held at the Grand Sierra Resort, this Summit aims to bring heightened awareness to the asphalt recycling and reclaiming industry.

Representatives from both ARRA and RMAUPG have worked together to create an agenda that allows both memberships to focus on association business while coming together for technical presentations and networking opportunities. Each association has a focused day and will come together on Wednesday. It is important to note that all attendees are encouraged to attend all sessions.

Kicking off Tuesday morning, ARRA will host their various committee meetings (which will not overlap). ARRA members will have the option to attend all of them or the meeting of their choice. Please note, committee meetings are only open to ARRA members. Additionally, RMAUPG will host their annual Golf Outing at Toiyabe Golf Club starting at 10am. Tuesday afternoon ARRA will host its Annual Business Meeting followed by the Pavement Presentation & Recycling Alliance’s (PPRA) Roadvocate Training. This three-hour training (2-5pm) will provide attendees with a comprehensive overview of RoadResource.org while learning the benefits of asphalt recycling and reclamation. With real examples from agencies in the west on their pavement maintenance solutions, this training is not one to miss!

Moving to Wednesday, ARRA and RMAUPG have planned a day full of insightful presentations. Starting the General Session off will be Dr. Jon Epps, Texas A&M Institute, providing an overview of the history of pavement recycling. Following him, will be Dr. Ben Bowers, Auburn University, looking at the future opportunities of pavement recycling. Scott Gibson, Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County will discuss pavement preservation and recycling in the Truckee Meadows and will include research findings from the University of Nevada.

During lunch on Wednesday, all agencies (state or local) are encouraged to attend the Agency Roundtable hosted by Tim Aschenbrener of FHWA. This exclusive session allows agencies to discuss challenges and solutions amongst each other.

After lunch, attendees will hear from Shawn Hammer, Fisher Sand & Gravel-NM, Inc, on recycling projects in the state of New Mexico. Todd Gonser, Culter Repaving Inc, will then discuss the cost-effective pavement preservation strategy that the City of Littleton, CO used. Ingevity’s Stephane Charmot will discuss the performance evaluation of cold recycled binder course with same day overlay on a heavy traffic expressway. Dr. David Jones, University of California Pavement Research Center, will share results from findings from two pilot studies comparing single and multi-unit recycling trains. Closing out Wednesday’s General Session is Midgalia Carrion with FHWA. She will focus on the federal vision and future state of practice for EPDs and the buy clean initiative.

RMAUPG’s focus day is Thursday. Starting the morning off, Adam Hand with the University of Nevada Reno will provide an update on research. Utah Department of Transportation’s Howard Anderson will share information on the demonstration project at the I-80 Wendover Port of Entry in June 2021 using hi-mod, low air void. Dr. Amy Epps Martin, Texas A&M Institute, and Tim Aschenbrener will then team up for a mini-workshop that will provide research and case studies to attendees on increased recycled asphalt content. RMAUPG will conclude technical presentations with a panel discussion focusing on recycled materials used in pavement preservation with Shawn Hammer and Tyler Wollmuth, North Dakota Department of Transportation. Stay tuned – more panelists will be announced soon! Lastly, RMAUPG will host a wrap up to discuss bucket list items for their members.

During the Summit, there will be plenty of time for attendees to network with others. First, attendees can grab their bowling shoes and balls and head to the Opening Reception at the bowling alley located in the Grand Sierra Resort. Tuesday night, there will be an Exhibitor Reception where attendees will not only have the opportunity to network with each other, but also spend time with exhibitors. The last social reception is Wednesday night. Weather permitting, a cocktail reception will be held at the pool’s main bar and fire pits where attendees can take in the beauty that surrounds Reno.

The Pavement Recycling Summit could not be made possible without the support from our sponsors. Thank you to all the committed sponsors! There are sponsorships still available for ARRA and RMAUPG members only. Each sponsorship comes with one complimentary sponsorship and a tabletop exhibit. The 2024 ARRA Pavement Recycling Summit with RMAUPG will be one for the record books. Registration is now open! ARRA and RMAUPG look forward to seeing everyone in Reno in October!
